

SAINT GEORGES LES BAILLARGEAUX
Saint Georges is a village with a population of 3,500, about half the population of Denmead, about 5 miles from Poitiers.
St Georges past
There have been people living in the area since 3,000BC (you can see evidence of this with dolmens – megalithic tombs), although it was only in the 14th Century that the name first appeared on maps, when the village and the church were named after Saint Georges Les Baillargeaux.
The village today
The village today is a commune comprising several communities: Saint Georges, Le Peu, Aille and Champ de Gain. The village of Saint Georges is attractive in rolling countryside and includes a church, La Mairie (town hall), two schools, sports centre and new commercial centre.

Many of the inhabitants work in nearby Poitiers and Futuroscope. Farming and vineyards remain important, with some impressive local wines.
The region
Saint Georges is located in the region of Poitou-Charentes, which is rich in tradition, architecture and gastronomy. With 450 km of coastline, the sea plays an important role in the history and culture of the region. The region is the leading producer of oysters and mussels, and there are many fine beaches.
The region is famous for Roman ruins, the green waterways of the Marais Poitevin and has many lovely and interesting towns.

Poitiers, inhabited for over 2,000 years, is the capital of the region with one of the oldest universities in France, over 100 church towers and many spectacular buildings.
Futuroscope is a large, modern business centre and a major tourist attraction. Inside the modern pavilions there are 22 attractions of adventure and discovery, with an evening show every day.
La Rochelle is famous for its medieval houses and 18th century homes built for ship owners and traders.
